What it actually costs
When to go
Cold, grey, rainy. Canals look beautiful in mist but you'll be miserable cycling in freezing rain.
Anne Frank House: book online 6 weeks ahead or you won't get in. Van Gogh Museum: first slot (9am) is manageable.
What locals know
Rent a bike (€12-15/day) — it's the only proper way to experience Amsterdam. OV-fiets at Central Station is cheapest.
Jordaan neighbourhood is where locals actually eat and drink. Skip the tourist restaurants on Damrak.
Foodhallen (indoor food market) is excellent for dinner — 20+ vendors, no tourist trap pricing.
The best 'coffee shops' are away from the centre. Boerejongens and Grey Area are reputable; avoid anything on Damrak.
Free ferry behind Central Station to Amsterdam-Noord. NDSM Wharf has the best creative scene and waterfront bars.
Honest warnings
Stay off the bike lanes if you're walking. Locals will run you down and they won't feel sorry.
Pickpockets are active on trams and around Dam Square and Red Light District.
Red Light District: don't photograph the workers. It's disrespectful and security will confront you.
