When to go
Cold, dark (sunset 3:30pm), grey. Christmas markets are nice in December but the city itself is grim in winter.
Museum Island: get the Museumsinsel day pass (€22, all 5 museums). Start with Pergamon — it gets the worst queues.
What locals know
Döner kebab is the street food of Berlin — forget currywurst. Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap is legendary (45-min queue) but Rüyam is just as good with no wait.
Mauerpark flea market (Sunday only) → karaoke in the amphitheatre. The most Berlin afternoon possible.
Techno clubs: Berghain is famous but you will likely be rejected. Tresor and ://about blank are amazing and more accessible.
Berlin is CASH. Many restaurants and clubs don't accept cards. Carry €50-100 in cash always.
Honest warnings
Cash only is still widespread in 2025. "Karte?" before ordering — some places will turn you away if you don't have cash.
U-Bahn/S-Bahn is honour system (no barriers) but inspectors fine €60 immediately. Always validate your ticket.
Berghain dress code: all black, no bright colours, no groups larger than 2-3, no phones visible.
