Freezing (-5 to 5°C), snow covers fairy chimneys (beautiful but cold), many balloon flights cancelled due to weather.

Crowd tip

Balloon flights launch at 5-6am. Book 2-3 days ahead in high season — they fly almost daily April-October. Winter has 50% cancellation rate.

What locals know

1

Hot air balloon flight is €150-300 (negotiate — prices vary wildly). Royal Balloon and Butterfly are the premium operators.

2

Stay in a cave hotel in Goreme — €40-100/night for a genuine rock-carved room. The "luxury" cave hotels charge €300+ for the same geology.

3

Rent an ATV (€30/half day) to explore Love Valley, Rose Valley, and Devrent Valley yourself. Guided tours are overpriced.

4

Ihlara Valley is a hidden canyon hike (3-4 hours, easy) with ancient churches carved into cliff walls — way fewer tourists than Goreme valleys.

Honest warnings

Balloon flights cancel for weather — don't plan your entire trip around one morning. Stay 2+ nights.

Pottery/carpet workshops will pressure-sell you. It's fine to watch but "just looking" is hard to enforce.

No ATMs in some villages. Carry Turkish lira cash from Goreme.
