When to go
Cruise ships + Game of Thrones tourists. The Old Town becomes physically impassable with 8,000+ day-trippers.
City walls walk: do it at 8am opening or after 5pm. Midday in summer is a heatstroke risk on exposed stone walls.
What locals know
Buza Bar — a hidden cliff bar (look for the "Cold Drinks" sign in a wall on Ul. od Margarite). Beer and sunset over the Adriatic from cliff edges.
Swim at Banje Beach or the rocks below the city walls. The water is crystal clear.
Lokrum Island (15 min ferry, €15 return) has a nudist beach, peacocks, a fort, and the Iron Throne from GoT.
Konoba restaurants in the residential streets of Old Town (not the Stradun main strip) are where locals eat.
Honest warnings
Old Town accommodation is expensive and carries suitcases up stairs in 35°C heat. Stay in Lapad or Gruz and bus in.
Day-trippers from cruise ships flood the city 10am-5pm. Plan Old Town activities outside these hours.
Cover charges at some restaurants in peak season. Check the bill for "couvert" charges.
