Ho Chi Minh City
Motorbikes, markets, and banh mi
What it actually costs
When to go
Monsoon. Streets flood within minutes of afternoon downpours. Still warm but transport becomes chaos.
War Remnants Museum before 9am — harrowing but essential. Ben Thanh Market is for tourists; Binh Tay (Cholon) is the real one.
What locals know
Banh mi at Banh Mi Huynh Hoa (26 Le Thi Rieng) — a comically overloaded sandwich for 55,000 VND. The queue is worth it.
Ca phe sua da (iced milk coffee) from any street cart is the real experience. Don't pay cafe prices.
District 3 and Binh Thanh are where young locals eat and drink — not District 1.
Cu Chi Tunnels: go with a small-group tour, not the big bus tours. The experience is completely different.
Honest warnings
Bag snatching from motorbikes is real. Keep bags on the building side when walking. Don't use your phone at road edges.
Taxi scams: only use Grab, Mai Linh (green), or Vinasun (white). Never an unmarked car.
Fake "cyclo tours" in District 1 quote low prices then demand 10x at the end. Agree on everything upfront in writing.
