When to go

Best months
OctoberNovemberDecember
Avoid
JulyAugustSeptember

Typhoon season, extreme humidity (90%+), 35°C. September has the highest typhoon risk.

Crowd tip

Victoria Peak: skip the Peak Tram queue (1-2 hours). Take bus 15 from Exchange Square — 30 mins, no queue, same view.

What locals know

1

Dim sum at Tim Ho Wan (the cheapest Michelin star in the world) — HK$50-80 for exceptional har gow and char siu bao.

2

Octopus card works on all transport + convenience stores + some restaurants. Get it at the airport.

3

Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour costs HK$2.50 and gives you the best skyline photo opportunity.

4

Sham Shui Po for street food and local culture — zero tourists, incredible dai pai dong (outdoor food stalls).

Honest warnings

Hotels are tiny. A "standard room" is 15-20 sqm. Budget rooms can be 8-10 sqm.

Typhoon signal T8 or above: everything shuts. Stay indoors. Check the HK Observatory app.

Octopus card minimum top-up is HK$50. MTR fares are distance-based, typically HK$5-15 per ride.
