When to go

Best months

Avoid
NovemberDecember

Monsoon — heavy rain most afternoons. October-December is wettest.

Crowd tip

Petronas Towers skybridge: book online at least 3 days ahead. Walk-up tickets sell out by 9am.

What locals know

1

Jalan Alor is the best street food in KL — Chinese-Malay fusion from 5pm onwards. Grilled chicken wings and satay.

2

Grab is dirt cheap — RM8-15 ($2-3) for most city rides. Easier than navigating the confusing bus/rail system.

3

Batu Caves: go at 7am before tour buses. The 272 steps are brutal in midday heat.

4

Bangsar and TTDI for the local food scene — away from tourist markup of Bukit Bintang.

Honest warnings

Alcohol is expensive due to Islamic tax. Beer is RM15-25 ($3-5) even at supermarkets.

Dress modestly when visiting mosques (free robes provided at most). Shoes off everywhere.

Haze season (August-September) from Indonesian fires can make air quality poor.
