When to go

Rainy season — waterfalls are impressive but roads become mud. Mekong rises and can flood riverbank areas.

Crowd tip

Alms giving ceremony at dawn (5:30-6am) — watch respectfully from a distance. Do NOT buy food to give from tourist vendors (it makes monks sick).

What locals know

1

Night market (Sisavangvong Road, 5-10pm) has beautiful textiles and Hmong handicrafts. Bargain gently — these are often made by the sellers.

2

Kuang Si Waterfall: rent a scooter and go at 8am. By 10am tour buses arrive. The bear rescue centre at the entrance is excellent.

3

Lao coffee is exceptional. Joma Bakery for Western-style, Saffron Coffee for single-origin Lao beans.

4

Slow boat to/from Thailand (2 days via Pak Beng) is one of Southeast Asia's great journeys.

Honest warnings

ATMs charge $3-5 per withdrawal. Bring USD cash and exchange at the market (better rates than banks).

UXO (unexploded ordnance) — never walk off marked paths in rural areas. Laos is the most bombed country in history.

Bowling alley is the "late night" destination — everything else closes at 11pm.
