What locals know

1

Street tacos are the pinnacle of food in CDMX. Look for taco stands with a crowd of locals at lunch. MX$15-30 per taco ($1-2).

2

Roma Norte and Condesa are the best neighbourhoods for walking, cafes, and nightlife. Parks, art deco architecture, and excellent restaurants everywhere.

3

Uber is safer and cheaper than street taxis. Always use the app, never hail a cab on the street.

4

Chapultepec Castle has the best view of the city and is inside a massive forest park. Free on Sundays.

5

Mezcal bars in Roma Norte — La Clandestina and Boqueria are excellent. Ask the bartender to choose for you.

Honest warnings

Don't drink tap water. Brush teeth with bottled water for the first few days. Ice in restaurants is usually fine (purified).

Altitude (2,240m). You'll feel tired and slightly breathless the first day or two. Drink water, go easy on alcohol.

Petty theft in crowded areas (Metro, markets). Keep phone in front pocket. Avoid showing expensive jewelry.
