When to go
40°C+ in the rock canyon. No shade, no escape, and the walk from entrance to Treasury is 1.2km in full sun.
Arrive at 6am opening. The Siq (canyon) in early morning light with nobody ahead of you is otherworldly. By 9am the first tour groups arrive.
What locals know
2-day pass (JD 55) is essential — Petra is far too large for 1 day. Day 2 climb to the Monastery (800 steps) and High Place of Sacrifice.
Petra by Night (Mon/Wed/Fri, JD 17) — the Treasury lit by 1,500 candles. Touristy but genuinely atmospheric.
Jordan Pass (JD 70-80) includes Petra entry + visa fee. Buy online before arrival — it saves JD 40+.
The Bedouin camps outside Petra (Little Petra/Wadi Rum combo) are the real experience — sleep under stars, traditional food, genuine hospitality.
Honest warnings
Bring 3+ litres of water per person per day. There are a few shops inside but prices are inflated.
Donkey/horse rides offered inside Petra: the animals are often mistreated. Walk instead.
The "shortcut" guides near the entrance will get you lost and demand JD 50. Follow the main path.
