When to go

Best months

Winter — cold (0-8°C), short days, many hiking trails closed. Unless you're skiing (The Remarkables, Coronet Peak) — then it's perfect.

Crowd tip

Milford Sound day trip: book the earliest cruise (8am departure from Queenstown, 4-hour drive). Afternoon trips arrive in rain and cloud — mornings are clearer.

What locals know

1

Fergburger is legendary — burgers the size of your head. Queue is always 30+ min but it's a Queenstown ritual. Go at 11am or after 9pm for shorter waits.

2

Bungee jumping at Kawarau Bridge (the original): NZ$205. Nevis (134m, NZ's highest): NZ$275. Both AJ Hackett — book online for 10% off.

3

Ben Lomond hike (6-8 hours return): strenuous but the summit views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables are the best "free" experience in Queenstown.

4

Glenorchy (45 min drive): the road along Lake Wakatipu is Lord of the Rings landscape. Rent a car and go slowly.

Honest warnings

Everything is adventure-priced. Bungy NZ$205, skydive NZ$350, jet boat NZ$165. Budget NZ$200-300/day for activities.

Book activities 2-3 days ahead in summer (Dec-Feb). Walk-ups often miss out.

Weather in the mountains changes fast. Hike prepared with layers, water, and a rain jacket regardless of forecast.
