Reykjavik
Northern lights and volcanic landscapes
What it actually costs
When to go
4-5 hours of daylight, roads closed, most highland tours unavailable. But: Northern Lights season (Sept-March) if you can handle the cold and dark.
Golden Circle is packed 10am-4pm. Start at 7am (it's light in summer) or do it in reverse order. Blue Lagoon: book 2+ weeks ahead, afternoon slots are quieter.
What locals know
Hot dogs (pylsur) are genuinely the national fast food and they're excellent. Baejarins Beztu is the famous stand but any N1 gas station hot dog is good.
Rent a car for anything outside Reykjavik. Public transport outside the city is almost non-existent.
Gas station food is actually decent and affordable (by Iceland standards). Bonus and Kronan are the cheapest supermarkets — cook if you're on a budget.
The Blue Lagoon is the tourist version. Locals go to Sky Lagoon (cheaper, less crowded, better infinity pool view) or the Secret Lagoon in Fludir.
Honest warnings
Iceland is extraordinarily expensive. Budget $200+ per person per day minimum. A casual restaurant lunch is $30-40.
Weather changes in 5 minutes. Layer everything. Waterproof outer layer is essential even in summer.
Don't drive off-road. It's illegal, damages fragile vegetation that takes decades to regrow, and you'll get a massive fine.
No tipping culture. Service is included in all prices.
