When to go
Cruise ship hell. 5+ ships dock daily dumping 15,000+ day-trippers into Oia. Prices peak. Sunset spot is standing-room-only.
Oia sunset: arrive 2 hours early for a spot at the castle or skip it entirely. Imerovigli sunset is just as good with 1/10 the people.
What locals know
Stay in Imerovigli or Firostefani, not Oia — same caldera views, half the price, walkable to Fira.
Rent a quad bike (€30-40/day) — the only practical way to reach beaches and villages. Cars struggle on narrow roads.
Red Beach and White Beach require a short hike but are stunning. Black beach (Perissa) is more accessible.
Wine tasting: Santorini wines (Assyrtiko) are exceptional. Santo Wines for views, Venetsanos for quality, Gavalas for boutique.
Honest warnings
Oia restaurants are 2-3x overpriced. Eat in Fira or Pyrgos village for same quality at local prices.
Caldera hotels with "infinity pools overlooking the sea" start at €300/night in shoulder season, €700+ peak.
Donkey rides up the Fira steps are animal cruelty. Walk or take the cable car (€6).
