Singapore
The city that does everything perfectly
What it actually costs
When to go
Monsoon season — heavy afternoon downpours. Still warm (30°C year-round) but rain disrupts outdoor plans.
Gardens by the Bay light show is free at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. The 7:45 show is less packed.
What locals know
Hawker centres are where locals eat. Michelin-starred Liao Fan costs S$3 per plate. Maxwell Food Centre and Chinatown Complex are the best.
Take the free marina bay light show from the MBS event plaza — it's better than paying to go up.
Tiong Bahru for brunch culture — Singapore's Brooklyn but with proper kaya toast.
EZ-Link card on MRT is the only way to travel. Taxis are clean and honest but add up fast.
Honest warnings
Alcohol is heavily taxed — S$12-18 per beer in bars. Buy duty-free at the airport or drink at hawker centres (S$6-8).
Chewing gum is illegal to sell (not to chew). Don't litter — fines are S$300+.
The humidity is 80-90% year-round. You will sweat through clothing in 10 minutes outside.
