Between seasons — ski lifts closed, hiking trails muddy/snowy, many mountain restaurants shut. Choose summer (hiking) or winter (skiing) — not the gap.

Crowd tip

Jungfraujoch ("Top of Europe") is packed and expensive (CHF 230 return). Schilthorn is half the price, equally stunning, and far less crowded.

What locals know

1

Swiss Travel Pass (CHF 232 for 3 days) includes all trains, buses, boats, and 50% off mountain railways. Mandatory purchase for any multi-day trip.

2

Lauterbrunnen valley has 72 waterfalls and is free to walk. More beautiful than anything you pay to access.

3

Grindelwald First cliff walk is free with the gondola ticket. The views are absurd.

4

Fondue: every restaurant serves it but Café 3692 in Grindelwald and Chalet Pfingstegg do it with mountain views.

Honest warnings

Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe. CHF 45 for a basic pizza. Budget CHF 200+ per person per day minimum.

Mountain weather changes in minutes. Always carry rain gear and layers, even if the morning is sunny.

SBB train app is essential — real-time schedules, platform changes, and mobile tickets. Trains are punctual to the second.
