When to go
Winter. Not freezing but grey, rainy, and the beaches lose their appeal. Whale watching is good though.
Bondi to Coogee walk: go at 7am for sunrise and have it almost to yourself. After 9am it is packed.
What locals know
Coffee culture is world-class. Never order a 'regular coffee' — ask for a flat white, long black, or piccolo. Starbucks failed here for a reason.
The ferry to Manly (30 min, Opal card price) is better than any paid harbour cruise. Sit outside on the upper deck.
Surry Hills and Newtown for food and nightlife. The Rocks on weekends for markets. Avoid Darling Harbour restaurants (tourist traps).
Bondi Icebergs pool: A$9 entry for a saltwater pool at the edge of the ocean. Swim here at sunset.
Honest warnings
Sydney is expensive. Budget A$200+ minimum per day for a decent experience.
Swim between the flags on every beach. Rip currents kill tourists. Lifeguards are there for a reason.
Uber is cheaper than taxis but surge pricing hits hard at night. Trains run until midnight, then night buses.
