When to go

Rain. Constant, grey, depressing rain from November to March. It's the Pacific Northwest stereotype.

Crowd tip

Capilano Suspension Bridge is overpriced (CA$65) and packed. Lynn Canyon has a free suspension bridge + swimming holes + forest walks.

What locals know

1

Stanley Park seawall bike ride (9km loop) is the single best activity in Vancouver. Rent at Denman Street (CA$12/hour).

2

Granville Island Market for lunch — chowder from Go Fish, doughnuts from Lee's, then craft beer at Granville Island Brewing.

3

Richmond (suburb, 20 min Skytrain) has the best Chinese food outside of China. Aberdeen Centre food court is mind-blowing.

4

Grouse Grind hike ('Nature's Stairmaster') — 2,830 stairs up Grouse Mountain. Brutal but the gondola down (CA$20) rewards with views.

Honest warnings

Rain is 160+ days per year. Bring a waterproof jacket, never rely on "it might clear up."

Downtown Eastside (Hastings Street between Gastown and Chinatown): significant homelessness and open drug use. Walk through with awareness.

Sushi in Vancouver rivals Tokyo quality — but at CA$60-100 per person for omakase.
